A Math Tutor in Northwest Las Vegas
Algebra killing your gains? I can help!
thrashermath@gmail.com
My name is Scott Thrasher. I taught at Cheyenne High School in North Las Vegas for 17 years and Arbor View High School for almost 10 years. I am a retired math teacher from CCSD with over 26 years of classroom experience. In my time teaching, I have taught Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, Pre-Calculus, and AP Calculus. I know the exact curriculum required of your student.
I also know how easy it is for your child to get lost in a massive class of 40 students. If a classroom isn't focused or other people's children present a discipline problem, your child is instantly put at a disadvantage. Math moves incredibly fast. Missed foundational concepts create domino-effect problems that can quickly become almost impossible to overcome alone.
I help local elementary, middle, and high school students break through that frustration and build lasting academic confidence. Whether your student needs high-level Algebra, Algebra 2, and exam prep, or simply needs to rebuild basic core skills like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, I tailor my approach to fit.
By focusing exclusively on personalized 1-on-1 lessons and highly selective, pre-formed small group pods, I customize my instruction to match each student’s unique school curriculum and pacing. Whether we meet face-to-face at the Centennial Hills Library, or in the comfort of your own home, my goal is to transform math into an accessible, empowering skill for your child's future.
It doesn't matter if your student attends a public school, charter school, private school, home school, online program, or is already enrolled in local college courses—I can help. I have seen it all, and I frequently know the questions students will struggle with before they even ask them.
I pride myself on being able to explain complex formulas using clear, everyday language. Too often, students fall victim to textbooks and classrooms that rely on dry, archaic terminology. While getting help after hours from a school teacher can provide a temporary band-aid, most public school teachers are responsible for over 160 students. They simply do not have the specialized time required to dedicate directly to an individual child's unique gaps.
We book one session at a time. That way, if you don't feel a particular session was a productive fit for your student, you are never locked into recurring monthly or yearly contracts.
Please reach out if you have any questions or would like to clear your calendar for your student's first session.
I primarily serve the Northwest corner of the Las Vegas Valley.
How sessions work:
Individual 50-minute sessions can be scheduled using two convenient options:
Centennial Hills Library: We meet face-to-face in a focused, quiet educational environment.
In-Home Tutoring: I come directly to you at a time that works best for your family's schedule. This 1-on-1 premium service costs a little bit more, but it saves you the drive time.
Outside the Northwest area?
If you are located somewhere else in the Las Vegas Valley, please reach out anyway! Depending on my current weekly schedule, I may still be able to assist your student.
Online Tutoring Available:
I also offer highly effective online tutoring sessions via Zoom that can reach students anywhere in the country.
Tutoring services are currently up and running for the school year. You can reach me directly at thrashermath@gmail.com with any basic questions or to check my current weekly openings.
If you are looking at my schedule and don't see an open spot available, please reach out anyway! I can often shift things around or find a cancellation slot that works for your family.
My main focus is Algebra. If you or your child is struggling in Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, or Algebra 2, I can help. The foundations of all higher mathematics stem directly from these core subjects. Falling behind in one leads to a very difficult academic path in the future. Furthermore, passing these specific courses is a strict requirement for high school graduation in most school systems. I can get your student back on track.
Beyond Algebra, elementary, middle school, and high school students from all math tracks are welcome. I have also taught specialized ACT math prep, so if you are looking to actively improve a college application score, we can work on that as well.
I taught in a traditional classroom setting for 26 years. Every single day, I had to adjust my teaching style to try and hit all 35+ humans sitting in my room. While I was able to do that successfully, I consistently found that just 10 minutes of dedicated 1-on-1 tutoring was far more beneficial to a struggling student than sitting through an entire hour in a crowded classroom.
In a large classroom setting, students are often too embarrassed to ask for help when they need it. In a private session, I can quickly pinpoint exactly where they are struggling and instantly start correcting the problem.
Let's be honest: it is incredibly hard for parents who haven't seen this material in decades to help their child directly. In fact, even as a professional math teacher, I struggled to help my own son with his non-math subjects the way I wished I could have. I was stubborn and should have hired an expert from the get-go. Investing in a tutor saves the entire family time and frustration—and we all know that when homework takes hours to finish, it completely kills a student's motivation.
Not all classroom teachers are able to connect with every student in a meaningful manner. Everyone learns differently, but public school teachers are unfortunately forced to move at a uniform pace that works for the majority of the room, not what is strictly best for your unique child.
It is completely okay to need extra help. It is not okay to do nothing about it. You have plenty of options when it comes to local tutors, but my time is important to me, and I deeply believe in the results of what I do.
Academic Background
B.S. in Mathematics Education – University of Wyoming (A rigorous, pure math curriculum blended with core educational instruction).
M.S. in Curriculum and Instruction – University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV).
26+ Years of Classroom Experience – Veteran educator within the Clark County School District (CCSD), serving 17 years at Cheyenne High School and nearly a decade at Arbor View High School.
Proven Classroom Results
I have spent my career teaching all levels of math, from foundational Pre-Algebra up to AP Calculus. Early in my career, I was asked to take over an AP Calculus program and completely taught myself the specialized curriculum from scratch. My student-first approach culminated in a 100% pass rate on the AP Calculus exam while teaching at Cheyenne High School. I have also spent years teaching targeted ACT test preparation and strategies, mastering exactly what is on the exam and how to help students systematically increase their scores.
Championship Athletic Coaching
Beyond the classroom, I have dedicated my career to coaching track and cross country—a role I proudly continue today. I use the exact same principles of discipline, goal-setting, and confidence-building to coach my math students as I do my athletes. Over my coaching tenure:
Inducted into the Cheyenne High School Athletics Hall of Fame as a Coach (Class of 2026).
Led local teams to 3 Nevada State Championship Trophies.
Developed 27 individual state champions.
Guided athletes to over 20 school records and 10 state championship meet records, helping numerous student-athletes advance to the collegiate level.
Named a 4-time Southern Nevada Coach of the Year.
Honored by the Las Vegas Review-Journal as the 2025 Nevada Preps Girls Track and Field Coach of the Year.
The Power of 1-on-1 Communication
Throughout my career, I have taught over 4,000 students in the classroom and mentored over 2,000 athletes on the field. Because of my structured, highly organized approach, I am proud to say I never faced discipline issues in my classrooms.
My biggest frustration as a public school teacher was a simple math problem: with 35 to 40 students packed into a room, it was physically impossible to give each child even two minutes of individualized attention a day. Having worked with thousands of distinct personalities, I know that almost all students struggle with the exact same core misconceptions. They don't need a crowded lecture; they just need a dedicated, undistracted opportunity to talk the math out 1-on-1 with an expert.
All standard tutoring options consist of dedicated 50-minute sessions tailored directly to your student's unique pacing and school curriculum.

Strictly personalized, distraction-free instruction. No other students will be scheduled during your time. Sessions are held at a Northwest location, typically the Centennial Hills Library.
1-on-1 Public Afternoon Sessions (3:00 PM – 7:00 PM) | $100
Strictly personalized, premium after-school instruction. All focus is directly on your student. Sessions are held at a Northwest location, typically the Centennial Hills Library.
1-on-1 Online Sessions (Anytime) | $80
Flexible scheduling to fit your family's routine. I work with students nationwide via Zoom or a standard Google Meet room with full access to digital math workspaces.
1-on-1 In-Home Sessions | $150
Premium 1-on-1 tutoring scheduled at a time that works best for you, conducted entirely from the comfort of your own home.
⚠️ Safety Policy: For the comfort and safety of everyone involved, a parent or guardian must remain on the premises for the duration of all in-home sessions.
Small Group In-Home Pods (Max 3 Students) | $200 total
Perfect for siblings, teammates, or classmates studying the same material. Groups must sign up together, and you must provide a quiet space where up to 3 students can comfortably sit and work. Because instruction is highly customized, siblings can absolutely work on entirely different math levels during the same session—just let me know their subjects ahead of time!
⚠️ Safety Policy: For the comfort and safety of everyone involved, a parent or guardian must remain on the premises for the duration of all in-home sessions.
To maintain a highly structured schedule and provide the best possible service, the following policies apply to all tutoring sessions:
Upfront Registration: To officially secure a session or a recurring weekly time slot, payment must be submitted upfront at the time of booking. You can reserve your spot by emailing thrashermath@gmail.com or by calling/texting [Insert Your Phone Number Here]. Once payment is received, your spot is locked in, and the calendar date/time on the website will change from "Available" to "Booked."
Group Pod Sessions: Small group sessions must be paid in full via a single lump-sum transaction. Partial or split payments from individual members will not reserve a slot.
Accepted Payment Methods: For your convenience, instant digital payments are accepted via Zelle or Venmo.
Strict 24-Hour Cancellation Notice: Because small group pods have a strict 3-student limit and in-home travel requires precise route planning, we require a minimum of 24 hours' notice to reschedule any session. Missed sessions or cancellations made with less than 24 hours' notice are entirely non-refundable.
In-Home Tutoring Safety Policy: For the comfort, safety, and liability protection of everyone involved, an adult parent or legal guardian must remain on the premises for the entire duration of the session. If I arrive at an in-home session and no parent or guardian is present, the session cannot take place, the lesson is forfeited, and no refund will be issued.
To maximize our 50-minute sessions and hit the ground running, I require the following preparations from families:
Topic Submissions 24 Hours in Advance: I need to know exactly what concepts your student is currently working on in school. The hardest part about math is often the dry wording, rigid phrasing, and complex vocabulary used by individual classroom teachers or specific textbooks. Math is a language, and it can be twisted and turned to look completely alien compared to anything a student has done before. Please send me your student's current homework sheets, study guides, or specific areas of need at least 24 hours before our session so I can plan our lesson paths wisely.
A Productive In-Home Workspace: For all in-home tutoring sessions, please provide a clean kitchen table, dining room table, or desk space where the student and I can sit comfortably, spread out our materials, and talk productively without household distractions.
